Andrew Lippa
Almost There
I almost played for the Mets
Second base
I got as close as you can
I could feel I could hit
I could feel this was it
Til it wasn't
Taught me to grow up

I was almost there
On the baseball field
In the open air
With my future sealed
It was almost real
Like a dream you feel
When you wake up the moment it's playing
I was almost there but now no one believes what I'm saying

That's wrong, my daughter believes, how it was
And she's the first on the field
But my son can't enjoy
Playing ball, not my boy
He's confusing
I still don't know him

Jimmy's almost there but hе's almost not
Like a name you knew and thеn soon forgot
Jimmy's almost lost in a made up world
And I wish he would listen to reason
Jimmy's almost there but he's there when the team is off season
So time goes by
I try and try
And still I seem to never quite
Can't seem to ever get it right
I never seem to ever get it right

So now it's carpools and work
Day to day
I push my dreams to the side
Got my kids, got my wife, my agreeable life

And I'm almost there though I almost fail
I can breathe it in but I don't exhale
He's a boy who needs what I can't supply
So I do what I know how to do

Spending almost time
Being almost where
Doing almost not
Giving almost care
I've been almost there

But is that all that I've got?
