Papa Roach
Gravity - Commentary
[Jacoby Shaddix]
We always have one or two songs on the record that are just a battle to finish and take a lot of work. Some songs come so naturally and some songs you just gotta fight for and… the producer loved it, Jerry was on board, Tobin loved it and I fucking hated it. I’m like “Ahh, I just can’t, something about it is not right, you know” and the producer is just like “No it’s amazing” and then I re-wrote the verse in a different way and it was good but it just didn’t have that thing and so we flipped it and put the rap back in it, ‘cause we pulled the rap out for a minute and did something else and that was good but it just didn’t… It didn’t tell the story that needed to be told and so, and really and truly it was just like to “I don’t want my wife to hear this song”, you know what I’m saying. “I’m so fucked”, you don’t like, “I don’t wanna like rehash this old shit”. But then it’s like that’s when some of the best music is, you know, that’s when some of the best music is written is when you’re just brutally honest and this track, you know, does really paint me in the best picture, you know. It definitely shows me as the scumbag, you know what I’m saying, but there’s some redemption, you know what I’m saying, change can fix things and can mend some broken hearts, you know, and this song, I believe is me and my wife Kelly this is like our testament to show maybe some other couples that are going through, you know, damaged relationships and, you know, broken trust is, well you can forgive, you can get through these things, it’s just you both gotta fight for it, you know and she is my gravity
