Gladys Knight & The Pips
Commentary 2 (from Verzuz: Gladys Knight x Patti Labelle) [Live]
[Interlude: Patti LaBelle & Gladys Knight]
Harold Moulton and the Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass (That's right, you don't know me by now?)
And I heard you sing it too (Yeah, I love that song)
Yes, girl, and that's one of them songs that you sing (Yes, you do)
You have to sing it (Yeah)
Mine was about 20 minutes long on stage
You know, we would do crazy things
I would just do stuff (Yeah), the song (Yeah), the melody (Yeah)
And you did another favorite one of mine, the "End of the Road" (End of the Road)
Girl, when I heard you do that I wanted to slap you
'Cause that's one of my favorite songs
Yes, you did that and this togethеr
You should've came up on therе and just got to singing and then I let you hear me
Well, I did come on stage with you, you remember in Philly?
We were here (Yeah, we were), Gladys was at The Mann (Yes, we were), right
And she called Ms. Patti-Patti up on stage, what did we sing? (Like get up on here, girl)
Did we sing? (I don't remember) We did
Yeah, but we don't know what it was, it was a moment thing
I think, I think we're, we're two people in this industry
That don't mind sharing the musical spirit (I know, we have to)
And the person who it is
We don't need to, you know, have all these fights and arguments and that kind of stuff, you know (We're not fighting)
And that's what I always appreciated you for, because you always saw me as just a singing women, okay (Absolutely, absolutely)
And it's, um, we, if chance, like I saw you do the Clinton thing when that little girl came up and sang, who's that baby?
The little girl, the, the, the little Clinton girl?
The little girl, she was cute, people thought she was your daughter
Really? It was when you did Clinton about six, whenever he was President, y'all (Mmhmm, mmhmm)
It was then, but this little young girl you gave the mic (Yeah)
And that's what I always told my band, there are so many better singers than me on my stage
Players (I feel that way too), my band
Right, the singers are singing their faces off and they never get a chance to shine (True)
So I pass that mic every chance I get (True)
Because somebody has to open the door for them (Absolutely)
And that's what we do ('Cause somebody opened the door for us)
Last time I checked (You know)
Okay, right? I tell you
Oh, let me tell you, Shirley Caesar called, yesterday (Girl!)
Did you hear the "Neck On My Hair", I mean the "Knee On My Neck" song? (Girl!)
She just got that, it just released (See), yesterday
She's a singing lady and she blessed us last night (Yes, she did)
Yeah, she called me and said blessings, Jennifer Hudson said blessings
Jennifer and uh, Chanté Moore, they said, "We're gonna get the masterclass from you and Gladys" (Alright)
I said, "Well, we got the masterclass from you little heifers because they sing"
Jennifer, last month, sang for John Lewis
That heifer sang me under the table (I know)
I called her and said, "I learned from you" (Yeah)
It's (I did too), brilliant when you can listen to younger singers and get something, and can teach you
When she, when she first started doing that song
I was, I was performing at one of the hotels in Las Vegas, okay (Mmhmm, right)
And she just wore me out, and she allowed me to do it (Oh gosh, right?) Yeah (She...)
That's what we should do with our music anyway, you know
That's what we have to continue to do because (Yeah)
Everybody has to know there are so many out there who are like us and better than us (Mmhmm)
And we have to give chances to those who don't hold the mic (Lift 'em up)
So we hold the mic (Lift 'em up)
Got to, that's what we do, yes (Gotta do it, you know)
That's what, I think that's what He meant for us to do (Yes), when He gave us these blessings of voices and music and all that kind of stuff (Health, oh, yes)
And that's who He is and we should emulate (We have to)
Who he is, and that's the way it is (Right? That's the way we work), mmhmm
And Ledisi, and all those singing little ladies, and Mariah Carey
And all of those little women who look up to us (Absolutely)
Hey (Hey)
