Managing Downvotes on Genius
No one likes to see their annotation get downvoted, it can lower your self-esteem and possibly put you off creating annotations which is never a good thing!

Over the last four months I've taken a different approach towards my downvotes. I've made a conscious effort to message EVERY single person who downvoted me to kindly ask for their feedback - what I found was really insightful so I thought I'd share it with you all.

Why did they downvote me?
- It was a miss-click!
- They misread the annotation or lyric
- The language used was too elaborate
- They were unaware of the 'propose edit' function

What did I conclude?
From messaging over 25 users, I was able to have constructive conversations with all of them and 23 of them changed their downvote into an upvote! It also allowed me to spread my name around the community, I gained a couple followers and I improved as a scholar. I now relish the opportunity to query someone on why they disliked my annotation, I see it as a learning process and my duty as an editor Moderator to counter negativity with positivity.

I strongly encourage other users to do the same and remove the negative stigma behind downvotes!
