Elliott Smith
Punch and Judy (Alternative Version)
[Verse 1]
A written post Punch talks to Judy in a crowded corner
They don't read page to page or say the words in order
Judy says, "Straighty, she's a stranger" to the straight face
Only sips a four-way, staring out into space

[Verse 2]
"And so I tried to stay away" says Punch late at a count-up
"You dress up like an opposite bit, really it's more than ergo"
Judy looks over like a strike of the clock, says, "I don't buy that, boy
There's two sides of you and they'll both be destroyed"

[Chorus]
In the eye they meet someone she could cheat
You're up against the words you never could dare to speak
It's your conflict, short of tie
Your heavy steps to follow her, the steps of mine

[Verse 3]
So Judy holds Punch, cufflinks inside her clenched fists
She had a dream of bandages on Punch's wrist
And so she hits Punch right, and throws him on his head
And says, "Stop right there
What the fuck are you doing? Don't you know I care?"

[Verse 4]
But truth [?] crawl up and drops on some dirty street
And a wonder Punch says, "Do you know what at all what's protecting me?
Judy used to hold me like a pencil" and he left some change
The cheap philosopher was spared, change for brains
[Chorus]
In the eye you meet someone she could cheat
Up against the words you never could dare to speak
It's your conflict, short of tie
Your heavy steps to follow her, steps o' mine
