Amapiano was initially a byproduct of the manipulation of house tracks, through slowing them down to a lower BPM. Before the name stuck, fans of the sound used to refer to it as "i-number" (which loosely translates to a "great track"). DJ/production duo MFR Souls (Maero and Force Reloaded) are widely regarded as the genre’s pioneers.

Most recently two Amapiano tracks, "Love & Loyalty (Believe)" & "Jele", by South African artists; DBN Gogo, Young Stunna, Kamo Mphela, Sino Msolo & Busiswa, were included in the compilation of music from and inspired by the 2022 Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Bringing together elements of hip-hop, kwaito and house, gqom is characterized by its minimal and spacious feel, broken beats and raw, lo-fi production. The gqom sound started to spread via WhatsApp groups in the early 2010s, becoming a predominant force in the city's underground. But it wasn't until Babes Wodumo & Mampintsha's "Wololo" and DJ Lag's "Ice Drop" that word travelled further.

Fast forward five years and gqom has appeared in The Lion King; on "My Power" from Beyoncé's Lion King: The Gift album, co-produced by DJ Lag.KwaitoKwaito comes from the Afrikaans word kwaai, which means "angry," but is also slang for "great." Kwaito music is a style of popular music that originated in South Africa during the 1990s. The genre draws upon several Western music styles. It combines South African musical styles with the fast beats and electronic sounds of house music. It also has elements of disco music, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, reggae, and jazz.
