The Hill Country Devil
October
Drawers of shattered glass
A hollowed bible full of cash
All lipstick stains and shallow breaths in the stink of death

October knows my move
A seven-deuce of different suits
Each time's the same I go all in with every dime I've saved
But proud I'll stand
For when it's gone
I'll remain

Another line of chalk
Yet I still spit each time I talk
The record plays and I might hear it out if I could shut my mouth

But I can hear that serpent hiss
As he marks me down for the city of Dis
Well fuck him too, I'll curse the earth until it turns me blue
And when I rot
They'll find me bare
In a giftless tomb

I watch the piles of ash
Work their way through the hourglass
In shallow streams they crawl about in a trail of black
October knows I'm done
When that midnight ink fills through my lungs
And I steal away in panicked haste just to hide my face
'Cause when it's gone
I'll remain
With the stain
Left on my name
